Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 Receive Their First Major Facelift

ByPeter Thiel

Oct 14, 2023

First major update in the respective ranges of ID.4 and ID.5, Volkswagen’s 100% electric compact SUVs. A little over a month ago we told you about the new features of the ID.4 for the North American market, now the pre-sale period has opened with new features that also affect the coupe body of the ID.5.

The changes barely touch the aesthetics, but they do affect the technological guts on board: the German electric SUVs have completely new software, as well as the multimedia system and major mechanical updates.

As far as the complete VW ID.4 and ID.5 ranges are concerned, the German brand announces a state-of-the-art software and infotainment system. Special care has been taken to improve its operation, faster, with more functions and more intuitive. The new multimedia system, which can be operated from the enlarged 12.9-inch central display, also has a new menu structure.

Both the standard Digital Cockpit and the optional augmented reality head-up display have also been improved. The interior also features a new multifunction steering wheel, now illuminated sliding touch controls, new IDA voice assistant or the new Harman Kardon premium sound system. Now the driving mode selector is installed on the steering column, with the ID.7.

Volkswagen has also announced improvements and a reconfiguration of the running gear, with a refined adaptive chassis control (DCC) and a system ‘Vehicle Dynamis Manager’, to distribute even better comfort and dynamics, improved.

New Engine and New Battery

Precisely from Volkswagen’s large electric SUV, the ID.7, the new “AP550” electric motor has been taken, offering more power and more efficiency for the Pro and GTX versions of the two German electric SUVs.

Starting with the electric power, which is now 210 kW (286 hp) in the rear-drive versions of the ID.4 Pro and ID.5 Pro (+81 hp) and in the all-wheel drive versions with two motors (+20 kW). In the case of the sportier GTX versions, power now reaches 250 kW (340 hp), 41 hp more than before. Torque has also been increased, in this case by 75%: from 310 to 545 Nm in the Pro versions.

Despite the increased power, the engine has been made more efficient, which, together with a new-generation 77 kWh battery (its capacity remains unchanged), results in greater range figures. The WLTP homologated range of the ID.4 is 550 km and 556 km in the case of the ID.5 with coupe bodywork. In addition, the charging power has been improved in the all-wheel drive versions, from 135 to 175 kW, which in turn makes it possible to recover 178 km of range in just 10 minutes.

All versions with this new battery have a new thermal and charge management system, which allows the battery to be preconditioned while driving before the next quick charge. Other new features are the new acceleration records: 5.4 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h of the GTX versions, which reach 180 km/h; top speed now also reached by the Pro versions.

The basic VW ID.4, with the Pure trim, remain almost unchanged: 125 kW (170 hp) of power, 52 kWh battery, 160 km/h top speed… although it does support fast charges now up to 115 kW (previously 110 kW).

Although the brand has not made official the prices of its renewed VW ID.4 and ID.5, it has confirmed that these will remain “constant”. In Spain, this means a starting price of 43,460 euros for the ID.4 Pure and 50,831 euros for the ID.5 Pro, which represents access to the range of electric SUV coupe.
